FAIRY TALES

Hello from Italy!

Enter Luca Rajna – narrative photographer, author and artist – documenting Life and Love between Lake Como and Venice.

In 1994 I graduated in photography at the CFP Bauer in Milan. My main diploma work was a long-term project, ‘My Maternal Grandfather Writes His Memoirs’ – narrative photography before I even knew it would become my life. That project won me the San Carlo Borromeo Award as the best young rising photographer of Lombardy, took my work to the Società per le Belle Arti ed Esposizione Permanente in Milan and then to San Marino, where, in a contest held by the Republic’s Department of Culture, it received the FIAP gold medal (Fédération Internationale de l’Art Photographique) together with a prize from the Department itself. Shortly afterwards I opened my first atelier in the historic centre of Como and began working as a wedding, couple and family photographer, with countless happy commissions from all over the world.

In 2010 I was named best Italian wedding photographer (White Sposa Magazine – Tau Visual Association of Italian Professional Photographers). In 2024 my work as an author, fairy tales of which I create both the texts and the images, earned me the gold medal of the International Action Art – UNESCO, presented by its President, Ioannis Maronitis. The awarded project, ‘The Faerie Tale of Venice and the Incense Trade Route’, created under the patronage of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth of the Sultanate of Oman and with the support of the Italian Embassy in Muscat, now belongs to the permanent collections of the National Museum of Oman and the Bait Al Zubair Museum.

For the tenth anniversary of the Consulate General of Italy in Ho Chi Minh City I produced the iconographic apparatus and the artistic plates of the limited-edition publication ‘The Legend of the Areca and the Lost Manuscript’, conceived as an official gift of the Italian diplomatic mission in Vietnam.

Here you can see my work and feel inspired – or choose one of the photography projects I can create for you.

narrative photography

What I do is called Narrative Photography. Every commission is conceived as a story – a visual narrative with a beginning, a rhythm and a meaning. You are not simply photographed: you are its protagonist.

My studio is called Progetti Fotografici – ‘Photographic Projects’ – because this is precisely what you commission: a complete creative work. Every Narrative Photography Project begins long before the camera is raised. It starts with listening – understanding who you are, what brings you to Italy, and what kind of memories you wish to preserve. It continues through research, planning, location scouting and narrative design. Only then does it become photography, refined by meticulous post-production.

My method was not born with the camera alone. Before becoming a photographer I was a musician: I gave my first concert at sixteen, in 1982, and my last in 1996. Those years, devoted to early music, taught me how a story breathes – its movements, its pauses, its agogics – and I bring that same sense of rhythm and composition to every image.

I am also an author and a visual artist: my fairy tales are devoted to Venice, and my visual work embraces both photography and synthography. I teach narrative photography one to one – a private conversation with each student – using an exclusive method that guarantees the effectiveness of the teaching.

LOCAL AND SPECIALISED

Italy is a land of art and culture, and I am proud to call it home. Living between Lake Como and Venice gives me daily opportunities to discover the finest locations, from the celebrated to the secret, and to understand the precise timing each of them demands.

I am local – on the lake as in the lagoon – therefore I understand ‘when’, ‘how’ and ‘why’ to take certain photographs. That is the benefit of specialisation.

If you are planning to visit Lake Como, Venice or any other Italian destination, this is your opportunity to have your story told in a way you had not yet imagined – ‘beyond expectations’, in the words that often accompany the delivery of a finished project.

Not every idea is meant to become a Narrative Photography Project. One is undertaken only when the location, the light and the circumstances allow the story to unfold naturally. This careful selection ensures complete dedication to every commission and protects you from expectations that reality could never fulfil.

What is crucial is telling your story through the art of photography – and preserving it, so that it remains timeless. Because memories fade. Stories don’t.

LUCA RAJNA PROGETTI FOTOGRAFICI – A WORLD-CLASS TEAM

Studio Luca Rajna Progetti Fotografici is also a team of world-class photographers. The professionals who have collaborated within my team have won some of the most important international awards – including a World Press Photo and a Sony World Photography Award – and their work has covered more than forty nations. Above all, we are people who work with passion and a human vision.
My own images have appeared in books and magazines devoted to fine-art photography, theology, international law, weddings, style and the art of entertaining, and architecture.

Whether the story is a surprise proposal, a wedding, a family chapter, a personal portrait, an architectural project or a fairy tale – born of my own research or commissioned, as for the Venice Carnival – I make sure every protagonist is portrayed at their best, alive in images composed like the frames of a film. Careful editing takes time – it includes retouching the complexion and softening the creases of clothing – but what could be better than preserving the greatest moments of your life in the finest possible way?

From celebrated villas – Villa del Balbianello above all – to unexpected hidden views of Lake Como. Getting married here, or planning your Lake Como proposal? Have a look and get ready!

Venice is the perfect place to celebrate love stories. You will be portrayed away from the crowds, in hidden streets and famous venues alike, becoming one of La Serenissima’s characters.

Once you visit Italy… it is undeniably hard to leave! I know these places as a resident, not as a visitor – and that is why I can unveil the most stunning locations. You will just need to take your pick!

Some ‘off-topic’ projects: the other fields I have photographed, which in turn have shaped my vision. From architecture to photojournalism – and to music, my first language – here are a few notable themes.

Lario Lightroom Presets – airy yet detailed, with a natural high-dynamic-range effect and refined matte-tone variants – and my one-to-one mentoring in narrative photography, taught with an exclusive method.

Some journeys continue long after they end. My fine-art prints allow Lake Como and Venice to become part of your everyday surroundings, through photographs created as lasting works rather than fleeting memories.
